Important points about Down syndrome
The most important thing to note is that Down syndrome is just a part of someone. It
does not define them. People with Down syndrome are people first and foremost and
deserve the respect and treatment that you would give any other person.
As such it is incorrect to say “Down syndrome person”. The correct term is “person with
Down syndrome” due to the fact that – as discussed – the person’s Down syndrome is
only a part of what makes them who they are.
Down syndrome is not a sickness or a disease, it is a genetic disorder or chromosomal
anomaly that occurs at the time of conception
